National Trails Day Worktrip in Ramseys Draft - June 4

6/1/2016

Picture
Saturday, June 4 is National Trails Day, and SSVC and C'ville Chapters have cooked up a joint worktrip in Ramseys Draft Wilderness.  We all enjoy hiking on well-maintained trails, and this is a chance to give back. Come and help us if you can.

Sat. June 4.  Joint SSVC/C'ville Chapter Worktrip on Upper Ramseys Draft Trail from Hiner Spring downstream for 1mile.  This is the most remote part of Ramseys Draft Wilderness, and it needs the most work. The main goal is to remove blowdowns, not the giant hemlocks that have fallen, but just those within our reach.  We will also clip vegetation.  SSVC will start at Camp Todd and hike up Springhouse Ridge to Hiner Spring (3 miles), where we will start working down Ramseys Draft Trail.  When we call it a day, we will return by the same route, making a total of less than 8 miles. 1600' elevation gain to Hiner. Charlottesville Chapter will start at Camp Todd and join us a little later due to travel time.  At the end of the day, we will all hike our together.  Anyone wanting a shorter hike can start at Camp Todd, hike up Springhouse Ridge Trail, and do some clipping on Hiner Spring Trail (badly needed).  These folks will walk back to Camp Todd with everyone else at the end of the day.  Everyone should plan to bring their saws and some loppers or hand clippers.  After the day is over, we will stop at a Staunton brewery for refreshments and to celebrate our accomplishments.
SSVC:  Meet at Churchville TasteeFreez at 8:30.  Leaders:  Lynn & Malcolm Cameron, slynncameron@gmail.com, (540)234-6273
C'ville:  Meet at AHS at 9:00 a.m., as usual.
