Friday - Sunday, July 10th to 12th: Carr Mountain Trail Work Trip

Weekend work trip in the Bergton area to reopen Carr Mountain Trail.
Opportunity for day volunteers and camping.
Shenandoah Mountian Trail Crew is planning a weekend work trip in the Bergton area to reopen Carr Mountain Trail. They will be setting up camp near the end of FR 302 at the base of White Grass Knob and working from there.
So who do we need? Why everyone, of course! Sawyers, for all the blowdowns. Pruners, for all the vines and small trees. Weedeater operators, for all the grass and weeds. Painters, for refreshing some of the blazes. Maybe even pickup drivers to shuttle people and supplies up to camp.
If you want to bring your own tools, that would be wonderful. However we will be raiding the PATC toolshed and bringing lots of tools along, so don't feel like you need to bring your own tools. Please bring your own PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, gloves). We expect volunteers to dress safely for this event.
Camping
So if you want to come join us for the weekend or for one night, where do you meet us? Well, there are several options.
Day volunteers
To all you day volunteers. Please meet at the Blue Hole Day Use Area at 7:00 AM both Saturday and Sunday morning. Someone will be out to shuttle you up to the work site.
Food
Neither Jim nor Lavern want to be cooks for this adventure. So we think the best plan is for everyone to be responsible for their own food. If someone wants to volunteer to be cook, contact Jim or Lavern to see what arrangements can be made. Also we will be dry camping as there is no water source near camp. So remember to bring lots of water.
Work Schedule - 8:00 a.m - 4 p.m.
So how do the workdays look? Both Saturday and Sunday morning we will begin the safety meeting around 8:00. Work begins promptly after the meeting. We will work until 4 and return to camp. But we are quite flexible! If you want do work more or less hours, we really don't care.
To be very clear, this not a cushy worktrip. There are no showers. There are no pit toilets.
Jim and Lavern will go in Sunday July 5 and weedeat the campsite. If someone is willing to help with this, it would also be appreciated.
If you are interested in helping please contact Jim or Lavern. Do not show up unannounced. Phone service is limited. It will help us greatly we know everyone's plan.

We will access the AT using the South prong of the Frazier Discovery Trail up to the AT and then head north on the AT to the intersection with the Ivy Creek Maintenance Hut, 1.1 miles.
Email Kate with your name, phone number, car license plate, emergency name contact and emergency contact phone number so she can complete the Backcountry Work Plan. We will have 2 personal weed eaters and associated equipment for use. Let her know if you need any other equipment from the ranger station.
Wednesday, July 22, 2026: Loft Mountain Work Trip
Meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Loft Mountain Campstore Parking Lot.

We will access the AT on the path behind the campstore and head north to the intersection with the Frazier Discovery Trail, 1.1 miles north.
Email Bev with your name, phone number, emergency contact, emergency contact phone number and license plate number so she can complete the Backcountry Work Plan. We will have 2 personal weedeaters and associated equipment for use. Let her know if you need any other equipment from the ranger station.
Saturday, July 25th: North River Gorge Hike.
Moderate 9 mile hike - mostly level and easy walking
Hike is on mostly an old railroad grade crossing the North River 8 times starting at the Wild Oak Trail parking area near Stokesville parking area and going to the North River Campground and returning by the same route. A car shuttle can be arranged for those only wanting to go one way on the 4.5 mile route to the campground. We are in a drought but hopefully that will change so water shoes would be a good idea.
Meet at 9:00 AM in Church I’ll along the fence behind the fence behind the shopping area on VA-42 at the intersection of US 250 for carpool/caravan to the trailhead.

8 mile hike and a dip in the water
We will meet at the (now closed) Massanutten Visitors Center on Route 11 at 9:00 am.
About halfway in the hike we will stop at Emerald Pond for a dip and lunch.

- Carpool to Trailhead camping. Friday: Meet at the Bergton Park and Ride at the junction of Rt 259 and Bergton Road and carpool from there. It is aproximately and hour ride to camp. Saturday: Meet at Blue Hole at 7:00 a.m.
- Drive all the way in to camp.
- Drive about 2/3 of the way in to camp and truck pool from there.
- River’s Edge Campground. So you are into helping open up the trail, but you are really not cool with camping way out in the boondocks far away from civilization. Here's an option. Rivers Edge Campground is located close to Bergton really close to the Bergton Park and Ride. Keep in mind it takes right at an hour to drive the 9 miles from camp down to Rivers Edge Campround. Meet us at Blue Hole at 7 a.m. each day.

Preference will be given to PATC members. PATC rules do not permit children under the age of 18 to participate in a hike without a parent or guardian present. Contact hike leader concerning bringing your dog.
