Rescission of 2001 Roadless Area Rule
On August 29, USDA issued a notice that they plan to rescind the 2001 Roadless Area Rule that  prohibits logging and new road building in our national forest roadless areas. USDA plans to do an Environmental Impact Statement on this action and has invited public comments.

Why does this matter?  The North River Ranger District has the largest concentration of roadless areas in the eastern US, including Little River, Ramseys Draft Addition, Skidmore Fork, Gum Run, Oak Knob, Elliott Knob, and Crawford Mountain.  These are places we hike and do trail maintenance.

Learn more and submit comments. .  Deadline:  Sept. 19, 2025

Proposed Shenandoah Mountain National Scenic Area
PATC has endorsed the Shenandoah Mountain National Scenic Area Proposal with four embedded Wilderness areas, which lies totally within PATC's North River District.  Senators Kaine and Warner introduced the Shenandoah Mountain Act in 2022 and reintroduced it in 2023.  Visit Friends of Shenandoah Mountain's web site to see the bill and map and to learn more about the proposal.

If you have any interest in adopting a trail or working with the Shenandoah Mountain Trail Crew, contact Lynn or Malcolm Cameron, PATC North River District Managers or sign up below.

Proposed Dominion Atlantic Coast Pipeline - Cancelled by Dominion Energy in July, 2020

SSVC voted unanimously to oppose Dominion's Atlantic Coast Pipeline route.

Position:  SSVC of PATC opposes the proposed Dominion Atlantic Coast Pipeline route because of its potential impact on the Appalachian Trail and National Park lands on the Blue Ridge and on the Shenandoah Mountain area of the George Washington National Forest (GWNF), both of which that have outstanding scenic, ecological and recreational values.
